Bees and wasps can establish hives or nests virtually anywhere, including in trees, under eaves, along chimneys, in attics, within walls, near windows, and by water valves. Additionally, the queen can decide at any time to relocate, usually because a new queen is born or the hive/nest has become too crowded. Once the queen leaves, tens of thousands of bees or wasps will swarm around her for protection. As the queen searches for the ideal location to build a new nest or hive, she and the swarm will often stop at tree branches, fence posts, eaves, and similar locations along the way--either to rest or try a new site. When they make such stops, it is hard to know how long the bee or wasp swarm will stay: it could be anywhere from a few minutes to a few days; or the queen may decide that she has found the right spot to start building their new home.

Today, nearly all Southern California honey bees have some Africanized honeybee in them. This means that both the honeybee and the wasp can be extremely aggressive when protecting their queen or hive/nest. When threatened, they'll send out pheromones, which can incite hundreds or thousands of other bees or wasps to attack. While a sting or two doesn't feel too much worse than a shot at a doctor's office, a hundred or more stings is not only painful, but potentially deadly -- particularly if the victim is allergic.
